GM5.5 Geodiversity and geoheritage – toolsets for a more sustainable world

Leírás:

Dear Colleagues,

This year, a single, big geodiversity and geoheritage session will be organised during the EGU General Assembly.

I would like to draw your attention to the virtual registration: it is free for students with proof and scientists with a permanent affiliation in a low- or lower-middle income country according to the World Bank definition.

May I ask you to consider and forward this session call to your colleagues, students and those who might be interested in attending?

GM5.5 Geodiversity and geoheritage – toolsets for a more sustainable world

Convener: Márton Pál

Co-conveners: Lucie Kubalíková, Vittoria Vandelli, Lesley Dunlop, Emmanuel Reynard

Recognizing the scientific and cultural significance of geoheritage is becoming crucial for the development of sustainable tourism and community engagement. Integrating geoheritage into sustainable development practices aligns with global goals, presenting a unique opportunity to balance environmental conservation with economic and social well-being.

In 2021, UNESCO embraced the International Geodiversity Day initiative, celebrated globally on October 6th since 2022. The term 'geodiversity' encompasses all natural abiotic elements of our planet, while 'geoheritage' represents a subset of geodiversity deemed worthy of protection. Being aware of wide range of topics and growing number of geodiversity/geoheritage studies, we call for contributions, that would include the themes especially related to:

1.      Geodiversity and geoheritage assessment methodologies and case studies,

2.      Geoconservation and geotourism management,

3.      Social and cultural connections to geodiversity and geoheritage,

4.      Interrelations between geodiversity, biodiversity, and climatic diversity,

5.      Contribution of geodiversity and geoheritage to sustainable development.

The session is co-organised by the Geomorphosites and Geodiversity Working Groups of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG)and ProGEO, the International Association for the Conservation of Geological Heritage.

In the spirit of celebrating our shared passion for geodiversity and geoheritage, we are delighted to continue the tradition of the "indoor picnic" during the session. We encourage the participants of the session to bring some local products (food, drinks...) related to geodiversity, geoheritage or simply to their area of study. Looking forward to meeting you on this special occasion!
